I have followed that which a time came defined the way “hard”, that is the generation of packages personalized for Ubuntu from ati-driver-installer-8.443.1-x86.x86_64.run:

• I sudo apt-get install dh-make dkms debhelper debconf libstdc 5 linux-headers-generic
• I sudo bash ati-driver-installer-8.443.1-x86.x86_64.run - buildpkg Ubuntu/gutsy
• I sudo dpkg - the *.deb
